Dear Sir/Madam,

I tried to use emacs editor with the utf-8 character set.

The letters with accents in the verbatim environment
appear in a strange way.

When I compile the LaTeX file into dvi, everything is good.
Even if I copy and paste the text, the characters appear correctly.
Even if I mistype the text '\begin{verbatim}', the characters appear correctly, again.
Please, help me, because I am used to edit my files through emacs!

%%% This is the content of a test file:

\documentclass[a4paper]{article}

\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{t1enc}
\usepackage[magyar]{babel}

\begin{document}

Some letters with accents: öüóőúéáűí ÖÜÓŐÚÉÁŰÍ

\begin{verbatim}
The same letters with accents: öüóőúéáűí ÖÜÓŐÚÉÁŰÍ
\end{verbatim}

\verb|The same letters with accents, again: öüóőúéáűí ÖÜÓŐÚÉÁŰÍ|

\end{document}

%%% Try to copy it and paste into a GNU Emacs 22.1.1 (Windows XP) buffer.

I also appended the relevant LaTeX and dvi files to this letter.

Regards,
Ásványi Tibor

Text inside verbatim is displayed using the face `tex-verbatim' [1]
(or `font-latex-verbatim-face' when using AUCTeX [2]).

So my guess is that the your "courier" font is not a "unicode font".

Bye, Reiner.

Please describe in detail what you consider strange. The attached dvi
file looks perfectly good here.

Andreas.

Thanks for tracking down the cause. I have made a change in Emacs 22 so
that on Windows only truetype fonts are considered for displaying unicode.

I don't know about Windows. Show us the output of `M-x describe-char
RET' when point is on ö inside the verbatim environment; I'm quite
sure that Windows users are able to suggest a unicode font replacing
your current font.

Fortification may differ from Emacs 21 to 22.

So it seem you don't use AUCTeX[1] (which treats alltt just like
verbatim, AFAIK), but the Emacs-builtin LaTeX mode[2].
