The header is part of the buffer, the toolbar, menu and mode-line aren't. I'm just looking for an alternative way to invoke the "sort by" function with the keyboard. Typing RET on an active button is consistent with other uses. But I agree that using new keybindings as Stephan suggested is a good alternative.
