Shouldn't that be

  ./configure && make bootstrap && sudo make install

?

The error occurs with exactly that command line. I had a typo in my
posting.

Hi. I didn't got the beginning of the thread, but I just joined the mailing
because i have the same problem when doing `make bootstrap' on Linux.

It's caused by the last change in coding.c.

Yes. I just reverted that change and Emacs bootstraps OK again.
