Activating Helm

[Heime via Users list for the GNU Emacs text editor]

I want to run helm from source.   What do I have to do to activate after
doing

   (require 'helm)
   (require 'helm-autoloads)

Do you mean you want to avoid byte compilation of the package, or 
you want to run some source you've altered?

I have installed it with make and make install

Then I do (helm-mode 1).  Is there a global activation?  When running it,
how can I test it by utilising some helm functionality?

Make sure you follow all the instructions that apply. There are 
multiple steps.

Once you do this, you have access to many helm commands from `C-x c'
prefix, you can rebind these to some more convenient keys 
e.g. C-x c C-x C-f To C-x C-f etc..., then you can start helm-mode.
Once this is done try Helm and configure it to your taste along the way,
you have access to variables related to the running source with C-h c
while helm session.
