ubuntu 10.04 (getenv "HOSTNAME") does not work.

Hallo Group Members.

(getenv "HOSTNAME") returns nil,
while 

bash$ echo $HOSTNAME

returns host name.

weird!? :)

have You got an idea why??

Does "export -p" show HOSTNAME?  If not, it is not exported by the
shell to other programs, including Emacs.

Yes. I read 'man bash' a few times. It seems to export HOST. Although  
I am not sure whether it exists in every instance of bash (login,  
interactive, non-interactive, etc.).

Isn't ubuntu using dash, not bash?
