emacs -Q
Then evaluate in a scratch buffer:
(let ((ov (make-overlay (+ 2 (point-min)) (- (point-max) 160))))
(overlay-put ov 'display "just a test")
;; (delete-overlay ov)
)
(setq-default bidi-display-reordering t)
(setq-default bidi-display-reordering nil)
Note that when bidi-display-reordering is t, the text in the buffer is
displayed as well as the display property of the overlay, but when nil,
the text "just a test" is displayed instead.

Not just overlays, but display properties in general:
emacs -Q --eval '(setq-default bidi-display-reordering t)' -f buffer-menu
and I suppose the problem with references in Info nodes is also related to this.

Thanks for the test cases, I fixed this now.

What problems? If revno 100005 does not fix them, please file a new
bug report with a recipe to reproduce.
Thanks.
