What you want to do is described in the help for font-lock-add-keywords
(at least in emacs 24 it is) - see the example.

Check the doc of `font-lock-keywords', especially the OVERRIDE part.

maybe a "prepend" helps here?

C-h f font-lock-add-keywords says:

For example:
