Actually, that kind of code was around because C89 did not allow declarat= ions=20 after statements. Even ancient C compilers allowed union-typed expression= s as=20 initial values for auto variables, and "Lisp_Object foo =3D ..." at block= start=20 has been in Emacs since the beginning; it's in the very oldest code (date= d 1985)=20 committed in the Emacs repository.
