The fact that it recenters is occasionally convenient for me. The fact that it refreshes the screen is essential. After a few days of uninterrupted operation, my Emacs gets into a state where the screen gets badly scrambled. The only remedy I have found is to kill & restart Emacs, but it is often inconvenient to do that immediately. In the meantime I can limp along with C-l.
