Yes, the discussion originally talked about setting image mode for .jpg vs .JPG (or somesuch), but detecting images in magic-mode-alist was done because someone requested having .JPG images without the extension (thumbnails for .MPG videos, I think) auto-detected by Emacs. This is worthwhile. Whether it should be default or not is another issue (and I certainly don't object to it *not* being default, though it seems like Richard does). /L/e/k/t/u
