2. hit C-h i to get to the info directory
3. m elisp
4. m buffer contents
5. page around in the file for a few seconds, emacs starts crawling and
using an entire cpu

Does it help to set inhibit-compacting-font-caches to a non-nil value?
If so, this problem is already solved in the development code.
