I use bar-cursor mode
(http://www.northbound-train.com/emacs/bar-cursor.el) which does
exactly what you want.
But while searching a link for it in emacswiki I also found cursor-chg
mode (http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/cursor-chg.el) which seems
interesing, too.
