`showkey.el' is not part of the GNU Emacs distribution.
Presumably you got it from MELPA or Emacs Wiki.  That's
fine, but this is not the best place to report problems
with it.  For that, send me an email directly.

It sounds like you have not actually loaded the library.
Did you do `package-initialize'?  It sounds like your
problem is not really with `showkey.el' but with using
the Emacs package system.

Try `M-x load-file' followed by the location of
`showkey.el' on your machine.  If that succeeds then try
`M-x showkey-log-mode'.  If it functions normally then
the problem is not with showkey but is with using the
package system.  In that case, please consult the Emacs
manual, node `Packages': `C-h r g Packages'.

If loading `showkey.el' manually did not help then
please send me an email (off the bug list) specifying
exactly what you are doing, step by step, starting from
a virgin Emacs session: `emacs -Q' (no init file).  Thx.
