how to not overwrite read-only files?

how to not overwrite read-only files?

For some reason, my emacs configuration just overwrites files when I save,
even when it is marked -r--r--r-- (readonly).  Is there a setting for emacs
to confirm whether to overwrite the file first?  Thanks.

Please provide the details: what command(s) overwrites read-only
files?

Also, please try the same command(s) in "emacs -q"; if that does work
as expected, the culprit is somewhere in your .emacs init file.

ctrl-x s saves the file even if the read-only setting is set.

Is the buffer marked as read-only in the mode line?  Has it been
modified?  That is, do you see %%, %*, **, or -- between the coding
system and the buffer name?
