Hi,

need quite often a combination of 

(file-name-sans-extension (file-name-nondirectory file)).

Would call that `file-name-core':

(defun file-name-core (file)
  " "
  (interactive "fFile to strip: ")
    (file-name-sans-extension (file-name-nondirectory file)))

    ;; (file-name-core "/tmp/daaas.txt")"daaas"
    
Probably it's known somewhere...
