As I understand it, only changes to the (visible portion of the) buffer
(perhaps via overlays) can do that "automatically"; you'll have to
actually call `redisplay' yourself. But I could be wrong: it could even
require something further to tell the display engine that something has
changed about how to render the text that isn't in that text. There is
also `force-mode-line-update', but I don't think it helps here.
