The doc string for `M-w' mentions Transient Mark mode, but even with that turned on I couldn't replicate the error. Do you get the error in a vanilla Emacs (emacs -q --no-site-file), evaluating the global-set-key form in the *scratch* buffer? -- Kevin Rodgers
