Sometimes I need to paste the contents of an emacs buffer into another
application. As far as I can tell, the primary way to do this is to
select the text, choose "copy" from the edit menu, and then it is
possible to paste in another app.
Is there a keyboard alternative to the "choose copy from edit menu"
step?

Mark the region you want to copy - using the keyboard, place point at the start and hit C-space. Move to the end and hit A-w to copy or C-w to copy and kill the region. Then go to the application you want to past into and use the middle mouse button to paste (assuming X windows).
