There is indeed a gripe when running `make info': warning: unrecognized encoding name `UTF-8'. but an info file is still produced and the command exits with status 0. Since RHEL5 is rather old (it ships with Emacs 21), that doesn't bother me. There are no errors, warnings, or font-related complaints when running `make emacs.pdf', and the resulting pdf looks fine. This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) I can even make a pdf on the venerable RHEL4 (with makeinfo 4.7) that superficially looks fine, though in this case there are some complaints about fonts when building emacs.pdf.
