FWIW, the recent blog post (setting aside its overall tone) sparked at least two discussions: on Reddit and on Hacker News. And among comments there, I noticed a few saying something like "this could make registers usable for me". And the idea of prompting when overriding a register seems good for default behavior, at least in theory. Take this with a armful of salt, since I'm one of those that never used registers, though this change (a better, visual preview) might make them more attractive for me too. Whether that can make them a regular tool, is still to be seen.
