Can you add Font Lock keywords to the minibuffer?

I would like to highlight special characters in regular expressions
entered in the minibuffer (when using `replace-regexp', etc.). I have
tried calling `font-lock-add-keywords' in `minibuffer-setup-hook`, but
it doesn't work.

Thank you.
