I notice whether indentation is made from tabs, spaces or a mix because I use whitespace.el to highlight them (and some other whitespace arrangments), so that I can try and use them consistently. Of course, if they never made any difference, then it wouldn't matter, but I find they tend to throw up false diffs. In this sense, I am using the Emacs to highlight the short-comings of other tools, so I can avoid them. Phil
