Hi,
I'm currently using macOS Big Sur Version 11.6.1 and I am trying to open Emacs App on my Mac after I installed Homebrew and Emacs via "brew install --cask emacs". The pop-out window says the following:
"Emacs" can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

Would it be possible to update Emacs to work with macOS Big Sur Version 11.6.1? Sincerely thanks a lot!

It's a security feature of recent versions of macOS. Could you try to
install Emacs from your package manager using the following command?:

brew cask reinstall emacs --no-quarantine

That will install Emacs and create an exception so that it can be opened
without being "quarantined".

Should this be in etc/PROBLEMS, perhaps?

Makes sense, yes. If we want to make the advice independent of the
package manager and more future-proof, we can suggest to Ctrl-click the
Emacs app from the Finder and click Open. Source:

Thanks. Can you propose a patch for PROBLEMS along those lines?

I've created Bug#51571 with a patch attached.

[ This is comparable to asking Apple to update macOS so that it can
recognize that your Emacs binary is not malicious ;-) ]

It does work. macOS just doesn't trust it because you didn't fetch it
from Apple. Luckily, on BigSur you still have the option to override
this (contrary to iOS where you're stuck with whatever Apple allows you
to install on their device).

Hey Kevin,

Not sure if this helps, but here are my old notes from my previous job on how I installed Emacs using the 'Macports' version since the Macports version is far superior than the regular Homebrew version (confusing, I know. It was for me too).

More so, because I kept getting this weird flickering issue on the Homebrew version, so I recommend using 'Macports' instead.

Here's my old Org notes, hope they help:

<2021-06-02 Wed 10:28>: I re-installed Emacs via this link with this port:

<2021-06-02 Wed 10:29>: Here are the commands I used:
#+BEGIN_SRC bash
brew tap railwaycat/emacsmacport
brew install --cask emacs-mac
#+END_SRC

1. Try opening emacs again, so you get that dialog box.
2. Open System Preferences > Security and Privacy
3. 'General' tab (I'm almost sure) look for 'allow this app to run anyway'
4. Check that box.
5. Repeat step 1, and it should work.

Please don't confuse Emacs Mac Port with MacPorts project. MacPorts
project is an alternative to Homebrew: https://www.macports.org

And both "normal" Emacs and Mac Port are available via MacPorts:
https://ports.macports.org/port/emacs-app/
https://ports.macports.org/port/emacs-mac-app/

(probably in Homebrew too, but I don't use that)

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. I'm just a hobbyist at heart, so I only write down notes for what works (aka use my previous email for advice ;) as it'll save you some hassle later)
