[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 456 bytes --]

I just recently upgraded my macBook to Snow Leopard and would like to
get emacs 23.1 running as this is the editor of choice for the CIS
department from which I am taking classes. I used X11 to navigate to
the "emacs-23.1" directory and typed "./configure". I got an error
saying that I do not have gcc or cc on my machine (screenshot
attached). Can anybody help? Sorry if this was already posted, i
checked and did not see anything.

You have downloaded the Emacs source code instead of the program itself, so
you need a compiler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compiler) in order to get
the latter. However I recommend you to just download the prebuilt executable
for your platform. A very popular one is Aquamacs (http://aquamacs.org/)

The point is, you probably haven't installed the Xcode developer
Tools. They can be downloaded for free from Apple website once you get a
free developer account.

As was already mentioned by Alberto, there are pre-built binaries. If
you don't want to use them, I've had great success using
[MacPorts](http://www.macports.org/). You will need to install the
developer tools, though. It's available in the optional installs
section of your Snow Leopard disk or as a download on the [Apple
Developer Site](http://developer.apple.com/) (for which you need a
free account, which has also already been mentioned.

I would recomend going with MacPorts as you not only get Emacs (`sudo
port install emacs-app`) but a wealth of other open source tools and
apps that I couldn't go without anymore.

In order to build emacs you need XCode Developer Tools installed they
are available on your mac os x install disc or can be downloaded from the
developer.apple.com web site.

After you install developer tools navigate to emacs source folder and
type,

./configure --with-ns
make -j2
make install

this will build a stand alone emacs application under the nextstep
folder. That's all.

On a personal note don't go for aquaemacs if you intent to use emacs on
other platforms.(such as linux,w32) aquaemacs changes shortcut keys to
match those on darwin (copy paste etc.). Then you need to know 2 sets of
shortcut keys instead of just one.
