It's hard for me to comment since I don't use Windows, but what
happens if you add "\" to the `file' element of
ffap-string-at-point-mode-alist? Eg:
(file "--:\\\\$+<>@-Z_[:lower:]~*?" "<@" "@>;.,!:")
