So it's not really an issue of someone being forced to keep email archives forever: we can read the older threads on the web too. The problem you are discussing it the difference between flat and threaded email conversations' display. Neither is objectively better than the other (only better for particular workflows), so this can create a tension. I wonder how projects like Mesa (that previously used an email-only workflow but now use Gitlab too) went about resolving that.
