For ex= ample,=20 if I see '(foo =E2=80=A4 bar) in Elisp source code, I'll naturally think = it yields a=20 cons of two symbols. It doesn't: it yields a list of three symbols, becau= se that=20 dot is not a FULL STOP (U+002E); it's a ONE DOT LEADER (U+2024).
