Not all of us read news in a browser. 2 - Why do you want to display the line number? If it's to be able to see what line the cursor is on, emacs, I think by default, displays the line number in the modeline. If it's to be able to goto a specific line, M-x goto-line is convenient. If it's to step through compiler errors or the output of grep, M-x next-error is convenient.
