emacs-nox (console version) - how to get menus to work

I am just trying emacs again before the new xubuintu install end of next month.

I seem to have missed the point somewhere with getting the drop down menus to 
work (using UK/GB keyboard). The help says M-` and another method is apparently
M-x menu-bar-open and also F10.

I did have the GUI version installed and then thought I'd try the console 
version - I am wondering if there is a conflict somewhere.

Can you describe what you have and what you expect to get?

Pete - I seem to get what I'd expect. Go into terminal and type emacs.
Emacs loads.
The menus are across the top; File, Edit, Options, Buffers, Tools,
Lisp-Interaction, Help. A double mouse click on one of them will
highlight but nothing seems to pull down the menu. F10 and M-` will
pull down the terminal window but not the emacs one. Other console
editors I have tried in the past (think it was ne - nice editor), one
has typed double ESC (or another command) and the menu comes down. So
it must be a simple keystroke I'd have thought.

Emacs does not yet support pull-down menus on a text terminal.  This
will be added soonish on the development trunk.

F10 should allow you to use an emulation of the menu in the echo
area.  I don't understand what you mean by "F10 and M-` will
pull down the terminal window but not the emacs one" -- what does
"pull down terminal window" means here?  In Emacs, F10 and M-` invoke
the command tmm-menubar.

It is – only that you don't get yet pull-down menus, as Eli wrote. What you get is something like this (edited a bit):

There are two windows. I pressed F10 in one of them, the upper one, *Messages*, and it divided, showing the list of menus in the "menu bar" in the newly created *Completions* buffer. The mini-buffer shows a first choice that you can override plus a means to navigate through the menus and menu entries. When you have chosen a menu, the *Completions* buffer then shows the entries of this selected menu. And so on.

It's probably easier to work through the tutorial and learn a few commands bound to keys…
