  Report:

  when loading files into emacs using the cntr-x cntr-f keys,
  the loaded file is not added to the "Buffers" pull-down menu
  anylonger. This used to be the case in older versions of
  emacs, and was a nice feature.

  My current Emacs is version 23.1.1, on Ubuntu 8.04.
  Only the buffers given at the command line at startup are present
  in the pull-down menu, together with the Scratch and Messages
  buffers.

I can't reproduce this. Does it happen if you start Emacs with
`emacs -Q' to disable all customizations?

This sounds like

http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=4122

which has been reported to Emacs, Debian, and Ubuntu multiple times.

Does the problem go away if you start Emacs with:

GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 emacs

or if you update to the latest Debian version, 23.1+1-5, from Nov 2009?
