Dumbing down Emacs 21 graphics?

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to customize out some of the graphical
features of Emacs 21, e.g. get rid of the toolbar.  My rationale is
that I use Emacs frequently via a DSL connection that's sufficiently
slow that Emacs 21 responds considerably more sluggishly than Emacs
20.  OTOH I like some of the other new version 21 features so I don't
want to downgrade.  I haven't been able to figure out where to find
the relevant variables--suggestions anyone?

Another poster answered your question, but perhaps you would like
emacs with the -nw option?  No X, but colors really do help a lot.  An
it's *much* faster than even the most slimmed-down X version.

Come to think of it, I've been wondering *why* this is so.  Over a
slow but still reasonable connection, things that should not affect
screen updating at all also take 4 -- 10 times as long under X as
with -nw.  For example, I timed the loading of my .emacs, and what
usually takes 4-5 seconds takes 30 seconds under X when running over
the slow line.  Hardly any screen updating takes place during this
process.  

Can anyone explain this?  Is it only me??

Yes, I use -nw occasionally, but I really do need the option to have
multiple emacs windows (not just multiple buffers or frames).

Beware of the terminology here: what is generally known as windows in
X terminology is called frames in emacs.  Windows in emacs is what you
get when you split one emacs frame into two or more buffers (not
counting the minibuffer).  So you can have windows even with -nw (but
of course you know that).

C-h N gives a list of new features and how to disable them.

Thanks--turns out I've mostly answered my own question.  The crucial
place to go is 'Environment->Frames' under the customization buffer
(M-x customize).  Eliminating the tool bar has achieved most of the
speedup I need, with the additional bonus of freeing up some real
estate in the window.

Why not simply run it in console mode?  Unlike previous versions, 21
offers text colours, hilighting &c. in console mode--and it's very
fast.  The only oddities are things like C <down-arrow> not skipping
paragraphs in text mode on the console.

There _are_ other advantages to X -- true multiple frames, many more
colors (in most terminals, you can only get 8 or 16 colors) better
integration with X cut/paste, much better font support (multiple
character sets, different sizes), 3D modelines :-), etc.

[I guess there are terminal programs that can display multiple character
sets using e.g. utf-8, but in my experience, they are very `brittle' --
unless you have the fonts on your system set up perfectly, you get
chopped-off CJK characters, etc.  Emacs is much more forgiving.]

It would be nice if there was a single easy-to-use command that turned
off all the X-bandwidth-hog parts of Emacs 21 (can the XIM stuff not be
turned off at runtime?)...
