The manual currently says that excess arguments are ignored, which means that currently all three expressions have well-defined (and differing) behaviors. A few months ago I changed 'message' in an incompatible way, figuring that almost nobody would care. Boy, was I wrong! That being said, I agree that the above style is simpler and would be easy to implement, and I can do it that way if you prefer.
