Change colour alternatively, by paragraph

Is it possible to have the text alternatively change colour, to separate one paragraph from the next?

How can I change both the background and background colour in `stripes' ?  The following
highlights the foreground but not the background.

I suggest choosing colors by {M-x list-colors-display RET}

I would rather do it from the code itself.
