The main introduction to Emacs may not come from a friend, but it comes from the simple fact that it exists on GNU/Linux distribution. I was introduced to Emacs that way, it was in the Window Manager menus. Then there was book with the distribution, Emacs was in the book. There are many Emacs books, too.
