   I am noticing that in master updated just a few minutes ago,
compiling a defconst or defvar form in the buffer via compile-defun gets
the following error:

	Invalid function: #<symbol defconst at 2058>

Byte-compiling the file and loading it works normally.

Thanks, but can you please show a complete recipe starting from "emacs -Q"?

Actually, Alan Mackenzie has already sent me a patch off-list that
mostly fixes the problem; sorry for the bother . . .
