I want UTF-8 characters, so that people's names, etc., can be displayed correctly. I simply don't want the PUNCTUATION in texi files to get translated to Unicode characters not on my keyboard, and which can't be cleanly displayed on my Linux console. makeinfo and friends don't have options for this. I realise I'm not going to get this unless I write it myself, whether in Texinfo or Emacs. I'm also not asking you to carry on this discussion, which clearly isn't going to get anywhere. But please take note of what it is I want and why - that is, precisely, punctuation characters that I can type, display, and search for with C-s. -- Alan Mackenzie (Nuremberg, Germany).
