Did this, but I'm still getting an error in *Messages*, albeit a
different one:

Error in init file: Symbol's value as variable is void: mail-mode-map

You're correct, though. sendmail.el is the place where it's defined:

(defvar mail-mode-map nil)


Anything else I could try?
