Dear helper,
Can you tell me how to get rid of the symbolic menu bar? I find it a
nuisance, an impediment to shrinking the email window whilst keeping its
identity, leads to occasional accidental losses, and can find no use for
it. Emacs is surely better off without it.

Try M-x tool-bar-mode
to toggle the existence of the tool bar.
