Basically, ediff-buffers provides a relatively improved wrapper around diff, so in this manner, it might be possible to do what I am asking, replace-within-highlighted-region using sed or awk and avoid their condensed syntax.
The perpetual problem is that of delimitation of a region within which to make changes, almost reaching the level of parsing.
