D'oh! Sorry about that, it says so right in the Subject line but I still missed it. I use xemacs as my X11 emacs client, and I don't always remeber that not everyone does this... As you've since found it, gnu-emacs needs static X11 libs in osx. I don't know why that is, but it's always been true.
