I can't answer your questions about cycle-buffer, but there are many similar
alternative packages. Take a look here:

I've been using cycle-buffer.el for ages as my buffer switching mechanism,
but it doesn't work quite right on CVS emacs. I'm surprised cycle-buffer
seems unmaintained. Are there better ones out
