Hi all,
I'm attempting to compile Emacs from CVS anonymous checkout (using
:ext:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvs-2003-09-16/emacs) on Mac OS X
10.3 (Panther) and keep getting an error:
gcc -c -fpascal-strings -fno-common -DMAC_OSX -I../mac/src -Demacs
-DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I/usr/local/src/emacs/src -fpascal-strings
-fno-common -DMAC_OSX -I../mac/src -Dtemacs -g -O2 fileio.c
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `regex.h', needed by `dired.o'.
Stop.
make: *** [bootstrap] Error 2
I expect there must be a simple solution to this problem, but I don't
know what it is. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
David

Don't know that one, when I last checked it out (in december) my CVS
root was :pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/emacs. Is that
new address a relocation because of the attack on the GNU servers?

regex.h is in emacs/src in my checkout. Are sure that your checkout
is complete and that the include paths above are correct?

Yes, see <URL:http://savannah.gnu.org/statement.html>.

Yes, it was the message that came up when I hit the Emacs Savannah
page. It dates from before the attack.

Well, I checked it out three times, and got the same error every time.
But the file's not there, so I think I'll try again today. Very odd.
Thanks,

Just checked it out again, and it's still not there. I hope I don't
have to wait for Savannah to be fully restored; that could take some
time, and in the meantime, I have a new PowerBook I need to be able to
start working on...
Cheers,
David

Oh, interesting:
geertz% cd src
geertz% cvs -z3 -q update
cvs server: nothing known about regex.c
cvs server: nothing known about regex.h
So it seems that CVS is horked. Anyone know how I might be able to
correct this? Or perhaps someone could send me a tarball (or a link to
a tarball) of a complete (and recent) checkout?
TIA,
David

This is probably because regex is an imported package, it physically
resides in a different repository, and that repository has not been
restored yet by Savannah salvage team.
One idea is to write to savannah-hackers@gnu.org and alert them to
this problem.

Are they symlinked on the CVS server or something?

Done, many thanks for the suggestion.

Something like that, I don't recall the exact details.

Yes, symlinked to gnulib/regex.[ch] (with-rant-mode "not to be confused with
gnulib/src/regex.[ch] which is a forked code: the symlink was created
specifically to merge the various forks, and later on a the forked code was
added to gnulib/src at which point I got sufficiently disgusted to lose
interest in merging the various forks").

Ah, well perhaps I can check out gnulib and create the symlinks myself,
eh? Are there any other possible gotchas like this?
Thanks,
David

This seems to work, but now I've run into a new problem:
gcc -c -fpascal-strings -fno-common -DMAC_OSX -I../mac/src -Demacs
-DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I/Users/david/dev/c/emacs/src -fpascal-strings
-fno-common -DMAC_OSX -I../mac/src -Dtemacs -g -O2 process.c
process.c: In function `Fget_network_interface_info':
process.c:3566: error: structure has no member named `ifr_netmask'
process.c:3566: error: structure has no member named `ifr_netmask'
make[1]: *** [process.o] Error 1
make: *** [bootstrap] Error 2
Is this something I can easily fix?
Many TIA,
David

Should've mentioned the version of gcc, sorry.

Please try to use 2003-09-13 of CVS repository.
% cvs update -D '2003-09-13 UTC'
It was the latest revision (before 2003-09-16)
that I could compile successfully on Mac OS X (10.2).
see http://homepage.mac.com/nand/emacsbuild/
I hope this helps.
