My advice, nowadays, is to avoid the old English erudite Latin abbreviations. They offer no advantage over the plain English expressions that everyone will understand. In the GNU C Language Introduction and Reference Manual, I have avoided them completely. That was easy and had no downside. We have made overall style changes many times in GNU manuals.
