Hi,

Would like to use the logo at [0] to create an embroidered shirt 
following [1].  For  attribution, should the name of the logo creator be 
added to the logo, or is it sufficient to add a label to the final shirt 
indicating the origin of the logo and its licensing?  Can also add the 
resulting dst file to the repository.

Looks nice.

I think the design was originally made by Luis Fernandes, but then
transformed by others.  I don't think it's necessary to add the
creator(s) name(s) to the logo, but adding it to the label would be
nice.

Perhaps Richard has some comments; added to the CCs.

If you want to make one shirt, and not commercially, I don't think you
need to worry about any legal issues about the image.

The artists might appreciate being credited on the shirt.

Thanks. It is commercial with a negligible margin at present. Two shirts 
with different logos from GNU software projects related shirts. For the 
other logo, the artist has given permission and is trying to make a 
store for their artwork.

If it works out well, we hope to be able to make more for the Kenyan, 
and wider African markets.

The image at [0] has a nice attribution, is not suitable for embroidery, 
but might work well as direct to garment or direct to film printing for 
t-shirts for the FSF store[1], and ideally affiliate stores in other 
regions if this is possible.

I don't understand that concretely.  Would you please state concretely
the activity you have in mind?

For clarity's sake, please discuss just one project at a time.
If you say a little about several different projects, I won't understand
any one of them.

I want to embroider a polo shirt with the GNU Emacs logo. The shirt with 
the GNU Emacs logo will be sold at a small margin.  DST files are an 
open format used to by embroidery machines.  Existing open source 
software can generate DST files from SVG files.  A suitable GNU Emacs 
logo in SVG format is [0].  The embroidered shirt will also have "GNU 
Emacs" on it. The logo in [0] does not contain any directly visible 
attribution information similar to [1], but something similar can be 
added if it is sufficient.  Attribution information can also be put on 
the shirt label.

That is nonetheless commercial.  That means we will need to think
about what our policy should be.

We need to treat these two products (and two images) separately.

For the second image, for which the artist gave permission, I think
that is between you and the artist.

Could you please show me the first image?  The one where you didn't get
permission from the artist?  Or at least, tell me its URL so I can look?

You also mentioned the dog cartoon, but you didn't say clearly how
that relates to these shirts.

For embroidery, DST files that contain the embroidery machine 
instructions can be created with free and open source software from SVG 
files.

Embroidery can be done a single shirt at a time, allowing for 
customization.  Some images are difficult to embroider, in particular 
images with many colors and gradients. Direct to garment printing can be 
used in this case.  It may be helpful to have this option on the FSF and 
affiliated stores.  Probably a similar permission would be needed for 
this use case as for embroidery.
