From what you've said, it seems that maybe this need only be done once:

If all you are doing is transfering mail to/from Gmail using free
software, I think you won't have to change this once it is set up.
However, I am concerned about "connect from a new device". What does
"device" mean, if you are running a free program on GNU/Linux on a PC?
