That displays as a diamond on my Linux tty.
I did C-u C-x = now, and it said ZIPPER-MOUTH FACE.
I can guess what it is supposed to look like,
but I would not think of it as meaning "This is a joke."
;-) or ;-} are clear ways of saying that.
