With Emacs 24 and above, C-y and C-u > C-y in isearch-mode-map have the exact same effect (isearch-yank-kill). I use master, so it looks like guess I have not done that recently. I have a memory of doing it in the past. Since there is no point in a search string, how does C-u C-y in search differ from plain C-y?
