The column-0 convention is very useful because it
gives you control over which lists are treated as defuns,
by how you indent them.

If you write

(foo
  (defun x...))

Then the whole thing is treated as a defun. But if you write

(foo
(defun x...))

then the (defun x ...) is treated as a defun.
