If you want to argue that the default setting is "intolerable for most users", you will have to come up with more evidence than just 2 very similar use cases (i.e. summary buffer of a MUA). Emacs supports much more than just summaries of email messages. It would also be prudent to wait a bit more than a few hours, before such far-reaching conclusions are made. Let's collect a few more data points, at the very least.
