Why do you assume they have children? Not everyone has these things. People are not compelled to have these things; it is a choice. Choosing not to have a mortgage can make life a lot less worrysome. Choosing not to have children is itself a substantial contribution to civilization's survival, and it greatly facilitates contributing to society in many other ways (developing free software being one). Anyway, the fact that it is easier to make money from proprietary software is nothing new, and we won't learn anything useful about how to live ethically by rehearsing it.
